How To Turn Sonos into a Music-Powered Party Game

It’s simple. Each round features a music-focused prompt that can only be answered with a song. Just gather some friends and fire up the Sonos queue.

With Thanksgiving, Friendsgiving, and all kinds of other holiday gatherings just around the corner, we’re entering that yearly season of inevitable togetherness. Whether you’re excited to reconnect with friends and family or dreading the awkwardness, one thing is certain: Music can enhance these moments and even bring us closer together. We know. The science says so.

It’s no coincidence that Sonos is popular at parties. Not only does the smart home sound system fill each room with the crystal clarity of your favorite party jams like you’ve never heard them before, but it’s easy for people to add songs to the queue as the festivities roll on.

This ever-popular Sonos party DJ use case has inspired us to experiment and try something new: Can we turn the Sonos queue into a game? The answer, we quickly learned, is yes. So we did exactly that. The Sonos Game is a new, collaborative way to incorporate music into your gatherings during the holiday season—or any other time of year.

Here’s what you’ll need to play:

  • A Sonos speaker or system
  • The Sonos app
  • A WiFi network
  • Pens and paper
  • A bowl or hat
  • A group of 4 or more

Gameplay Instructions:

  1. Before you start the game, each player should join the host’s WiFi network, download the Sonos app, and select Connect to an existing system. This gives each player access to the host’s streaming services and the queue.
  2. Everyone writes down a few prompts on pieces of paper and puts them into a bowl. Use some of our example prompts or refer to them for inspiration.
  3. Choose one player to start off as the MC. The rest of the players will be the DJs.
  4. The MC picks one prompt from the bowl and reads it aloud to the group. The MC then plays a prompt-appropriate song while the DJs think of their own songs to add in response to the prompt. The funnier the better.
  5. DJs have the duration of the MC’s song to search in the Sonos app for a song that answers the prompt and select Play Next to add it to the queue. To do this, just tap the three dots next to your song choice. Be careful to select Play Next. If you accidentally hit Play Now, you’ll be disqualified from that round.
  6. The MC plays 30 seconds of each song and picks their favorite. The DJ who played that song wins the round.
  7. The winning DJ is awarded a point and becomes the new MC, ushering in a new round of the game.
  8. The first player with five points wins. But by all means, keep playing as long as you feel like.

By the end of the night, you’ll have a pretty wild playlist. How’s that for a parting gift?
