Sonos 3.8: New support for Mac OS X Mountain Lion and Android 4.0

Posted on May 30th, 2012 by Sonos Staff in News, Products

Sonos Controller App for MacToday we’ve released a free software update–Sonos Version 3.8–which features support for Mac OS X Mountain Lion and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

In addition to the new OS support, the Sonos 3.8 offers a handful of enhancements to our Sonos Controller apps for Mac and PC. For one, the app will now fit neatly onto computers with smaller screens, such as netbooks. Plus, you can also resize the Mini Controller by clicking an icon at the top of the window. Finally, we’ve brightened the navigation bar at the top of the screen to make it easier to read.

To enjoy the refreshed Sonos experience, follow the update prompts on any Sonos Controller and check your app store for the latest update.

How about the alarms. Are we still stuck with a maximum of 2 hours?

    • http://sonos.com Sonos

Not sure we understand–are you referring to the sleep timer?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=572799885 Jeff Tatum

The time the alarm plays for, max is 2 hours or no limit.  3/4/6/12 would be good option.  Then once you get out of bed music stays on for a few hours should you want it to.  A bit like an alarm/sleep timer combo, but an alarm/stay awake timer!

        • http://sonos.com Sonos

A-ha…got it! No, there have been no updates to that functionality, but we will pass on the request to the product dev team. Or you can always submit your ideas/feature requests directly to the forum we have specifically for that! http://forums.sonos.com/forumdisplay.php?f=32

          • THM

And support “repeat” mode for alarms. PLEASE!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=572799885 Jeff Tatum

Interface is better, not as dark, but in dire need of some skins, as it’s still very dark on my monitor, but an improvement none the less.  Little steps . . . . Now we need a replacement controller for the CR200 (discontinued) and the not forgotten CR100.

    • ScoBek

Your comment about how dark the skin is definitely resonated with me. Can we please get something else? Before this update, the other skin set coloring worked well, but being able to clearly see things is tough — I have great vision, am under 40, and am complaining about not being able to see. Did my life just jump the shark?

  • Barry

I have the sonos PC controller freeze sometimes on close on my win 7 machine but it is ok on my Vista Machine.  Are you aware of this and if so is it fixed in this release?

    • http://www.sonos.com/support Sonos Support Team

      Barry,

That is not an issue we are aware of at this time.  We would recommend that you update to software version 3.8 and then see if the problem persists.  If so, please open an incident with our support team here and we’ll follow up with you to obtain some more information:

      Thanks,

  • Christopher

But what changed actually for Android ICS? I don’t see any difference.

  • No Way

All very well, but when will spotify interface be improved…please :-)

    • http://sonos.com Sonos

We are continually working to improve all music service integration and will continue to do so.

  • Phil

The update fails on our laptop as well as both my wifes and my iphone and it won’t even let me continue and use the system without the update so can no longer use my Sonos system at all! Great!

    • Phil

Hoping it’s just that the download servers are busy and it might work tomorrow. As soon as I press Ipdate Now it says n error occurred. Still can’t believe it won’t let me use the system without the update! Very poor!

      • http://www.sonos.com/support Sonos Support Team

        Phil,

We’re sorry to hear about the trouble.  We’re not aware of any issues on our side which would prevent the update from downloading to your system.  There could be another problem preventing the installation on your Controllers.

If you haven’t already, we’d recommend that you contact the Sonos Support team here:

        https://sonos.custhelp.com/app/ask

Our team will identify the problem and help get you back up and running.

        Thanks,

        Sonos Support Team

        • Phil

Okay. Thanks for the reply. Will contact them in the morning. Too late now. Sure it must be a download problem because that’s as far as it gets. It says downloading and then a millisecond later an error occurred.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004389663910 AB Truthiness

Experiencing same problem with recent update (12/12) only on the Fire tablets. It’s ok on the iPhones and PC.

      • Jan

Same problem. Was able to get my play:3 updated after cabling it directy, but bridge and play:5 don’t. Tried it with different controllers iPhone, iPad, Mac.

  • Gpeiers

I have a Apple network with mutiple Apple TV’s / Airport expresses connected to B&O systems and would like to add a Sonos Controller non-powered one for some additional ( B&O 6000 ) no system just the speakers to that network using Apple Airplay.  Is this possible?  The reason for using the Sonos controller is that it has a volume control.

Will this work.  My system is extremely user friendly and reliable right now and just want to expand.

    • http://www.sonos.com/support Sonos Support Team

      Gpeiers,

Sonos doesn’t natively support AirPlay so you would need to connect one of your Airport Express units into the line-in on your Sonos player.  That player would then connect into the audio system of your choice.  Sonos does bring more to the table than just AirPlay if you’re interested in using one of the many supported Sonos music services.

      Thanks,

      Sonos Support Team

  • Don Alberto

Sorry – but I just can’t understand your politics. Another controller update and again none of the real problems addressed: No proper support for 65k titles, no universal search functionality, aren’t you reading the sonos forums? There are threads with hundreds of votes for these features and you just ignore them. Seriously what is this. These enhancements you are shipping could be build by a 50% headcount. I am software product manager since 8 years now but these are no proper releases…

    • http://www.sonos.com/support Sonos Support Team

      Hi Don,

We appreciate your feedback and I can assure you we do continue to check our forums for feature requests and product enhancements, but it is also our policy that we do not comment on our future products or enhancements, so I can sympathize with you.  The best thing to do is to continue to provide feedback for the features you would like to see and we will do our best to follow through.  Since some features are easier to implement than others, we appreciate your patience.  If you have any other questions, feel free to contact us at http://www.sonos.com/support.

      Thanks,Sonos Support

  • Moksek

After update. The component not connected to the net by cable, keeps disapering from the controler and stops playing.

    • http://www.sonos.com/support Sonos Support Team

      Moksek,

We’re sorry to hear about the trouble.  If you haven’t already, we’d recommend that you contact Sonos Support using our Ask a Question page here:  https://sonos.custhelp.com/app/ask

You’ll be prompted there to submit a diagnostic report from your system.  The diagnostic will have more information about what might be causing the problems with the player / music.

      Thanks,

      Sonos Support Team

  • Andygeog

Hi, can you detail what changes have been made for Android 4..0?Is it in the Google Play store? Andy

    • http://sonos.com Sonos

       Hi Andy – ICS required
some minor changes to our UX. There are no notable new features.

      • Andygeog

        Hi, thanks for the reply.

I’m running ICS on two devices. I’d just like to know what we should be seeing.

An Android tablet app to match the ipad would be wonderful! Are there any plans to develop one?

        Andy

  • Technojunkie

When are you oing to incorporate the Spotify “Radio” functionality into the Sons software ? There are other apps available that give this functionality so why not Sonos ?

    • http://sonos.com Sonos

We don’t announce timelines, but we continue to work with Spotify to improve the interface and features on Sonos.

  • Bradleydennison

    Dear Sonos Customer Support,

My OSX Controller and ipad remotes work perfectly. I’ve never experienced a crash and am very pleased with it. My old gingerbread phone also works brilliantly. Just thought I’d let you know :)

    • Melhughes76

      Hahahaha!

Odd how people jump down Sonos’ throat about incompatibility of new devices, i.e. Android tablets. I personally have a complaint. I would like a remote controller to read my mind and choose which track to play when I am thinking of it. I would also like my 2011 Panasonic microwave to be able to select tracks and control volume. Many thanks!

      Mel xx

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100004389663910 AB Truthiness

I believe the complaints are about updates that are supposed to address Android devices, yet they do not load or update.

      • Nick

Good point! I found my old Apple //e in the roof of my Dad’s place the other day, and I’m shocked to find that it won’t interact with my Sonos system. Seriously! Do these people have any respect for their users?!

  • Brickinoz2002

    Keep the updates coming Sonos

  • Andreas Henningsson

I want Grooveshark in Sonos. And I also what to use the iPhone volume buttons to control the sound volume in the sonos app.

    • http://www.sonos.com/support Sonos Support Team

      Hi Andreas,

Both of those are great feature requests!  Feel free to log in to our forums at http://forums.sonos.com and add those to our “Sound Ideas” section.  If you have any other feature requests, this is the perfect place to provide that feedback.

      Thanks,

I have a problem since upgrading to the 3.8 controller, the Volume bar is gone. In fact nothin but the search field shows in the banner menu bar in the application. Stange enough when I do mouse over, I do see mouse-over info fields, and it does work to Mute for instance. see image…

    • http://www.sonos.com/support Sonos Support Team

      Karin,

Problems rendering the application like this can be caused by UI modifications.  Would you be able to open an incident with our support team and upload a diagnostic?  This should give us a better idea of what might be causing this odd behavior.

      Thanks,

  • Michael

I downloaded the new Android app on my Samsung Galaxy S3 with Android 4.0, but it does not work. The app does not find my zone players. The app work fine on my HTC Legend with Android 2.3

  • John Farley

Dear Sonos, all was perfect and now nothing works because of a forced software update.

I have tried to mulitiple times throughout today to update, laptop, iPod touch, iPad, it keeps telling me there is an error!!

I can no longer use my sonos system, I am not alone with this issue, what have you done, more importantly when will it be fixed?

  • JP

Since updating to Sonos 3.8 on my Mac running OS X 10.7.4 there is no GUI of the volume bar in the top left hand corner of the Sonos controller. Is this normal?

    • http://www.sonos.com/support Sonos Support Team

      JP,

We just saw that you resolved this with our team by uninstalling and reinstalling the Controller.  Glad to hear that it’s working again and please let us know if there are any further issues.

      Thanks,

      Sonos Support Team

  • Spkeonbass

I have just ordered an android 7″ tablet running ics. I also want to order a play 5.
Given all the bugs that are discussed in this forum. Will the android app work ok now?

    • Andreas Henningsson

Yes. All clients that I have tested works good. iPhone, iPad, Android. They all provide and easy way to play music.

    • http://www.sonos.com/support Sonos Support Team

      Hi Spkeonbass,

The Sonos Controller for Android should work just fine on your 7″ tablet running ICS.  If you do encounter any issues or if you have any questions, feel free to contact the Sonos Support team: http://www.sonos.com/support.

  • Forrest Webber

I’m having trouble with access being denied for music… I’ve tried a number of the solutions on this website.  I’m definitely not savvy with this stuff, but believe I have followed all the instructions well and still no results.  Anyone have any suggestions?  SONOS, can this issue be addressed with an update?

    Thanks

    • http://www.sonos.com/support Sonos Support Team

      Hi Forrest,

Judging by the screenshot, the router and the computer are having trouble syncing up with the correct name for the computer.  The first thing I would do is change (shorten) the computer name and reboot.  To do this, open System Preferences, and choose Sharing.  At the top, shorten the computer name down to something that is less than 15 characters and contains no apostrophes.  Then, reboot your Mac.  If you still have trouble accessing your music share, please contact us so we can open a support ticket for you.  www.sonos.com/support.

      Thanks,Sonos Support

Greetings, I have just upgraded my Macs (iMac, Air, MBPro) to Mountain Lion. Sonos went away. My Sonos 3.8 Setup Assistant tells me that ‘Sonos was unable to add the music folder’. The folder (iTunes Music) is shared and Everyone has Read/Write permissions. I have unplugged and re-plugged all Sonos components, restarted 3.8, all to no avail. What next? Thx
