Now streaming music in one million rooms

Sonos celebrates one million

That’s right, Sonos has gone platinum— as of today, we’re officially streaming music in more than one million rooms around the world.   That means there’s music blasting everywhere from kitchens in Paris to roof decks in New York City. We think that totally rocks, so thanks for helping us make this happen.

It’s hard to believe that it all started back in 2002, when our fearless founders decided to reinvent the home stereo for the digital age. We shipped our first product in 2005 and now you can find our Wireless HiFi Systems in over one million rooms. But don’t worry, we have no intention of resting on our laurels – we will charge full-speed ahead in our efforts to bring you a simple, enjoyable home listening experience. It’s all part of our ultimate goal to fill every home with all the music on earth.

We’d love to hear from those who have a room (or two) filled with music from Sonos. Use the comment section below to tell us about your favorite room full of music—or even share a tale about a sad room in desperate need of Sonos. Or if you’re feeling really inspired, create a playlist of songs from your favorite platinum-selling artists. Extra credit if you have pics to share.

Congrats! I have a living room-bedroom-bathroom setup myself with zoneplayer 120 in living room and 2x S5 for the rest of the apartment. Controlled by ipad/iphone using Spotify mostly. Nice nice :)

Notre PoubelleAugust 31st, 2011 at 3:03 pm

Congrats ! I have a Play:5 connected to Spotify. Going to get a Play:3 soon. Sonos is definitely the best wireless music system around.

DerekAugust 31st, 2011 at 3:46 pm

Good News. I have a ZP90 in the living room, S5s in the kitchen and dining room and a Play:3 in the bedroom. I loved it so much I blogged about it:

Dereck BreuningAugust 31st, 2011 at 3:58 pm

Yeah same here, great stuff. Got a Zone Bridge, a ZP90 in the living room hooked up to my receiver and a Play:3 in the bathroom. I intend on expanding with another two Play:3’s in the kitchen and bedroom and a Play:5 for in the office. Keep on keeping’ on! And please release that Lion update soon 😉

Thanks for the compliment! Let us know how you like the PLAY:3 once you have a chance to try it out — perfect for the kitchen. 😉

SimplySonos in the UK have supplied 20,000 of those Zones! We’d like to think that’s because of our exemplary service and support, but we like our customers to be the judge of that.

ChristopheAugust 31st, 2011 at 4:45 pm

My little contribution is a ZP 90 in the living-room and a PLAY:5 moving around the rest of the house.
I’m hurrying to finish refurbishing the patio where I have run speaker cables in the wall to connect a ZP120 (+1 for Sonos) to a pair of Elipson speakers…

Sonos is the one product family that I have always gotten more from than I thought I would, and have had negative buyers remorse, where I only wish I had bought more and more of it.  Great news on the Platinum as that means plenty of people are getting the best music (anything they want) the easiest and most clear way possible.

Siestalife KwAugust 31st, 2011 at 5:34 pm

Every room in my house is serenaded via Sonos. ZP120 to router in back bedroom feeds hard wired stereo ceiling speaker in bathroom + the pc. Play:3 feeds the back bedroom. S5’s for main bedroom and living room. ZP90 to Denon in kitchen. Sorted! Just the garden to go and maybe twin the S5’s in the livingroom! I can’t tell you how much I love Sonos. I rave about it to everyone. Thank you Sonos!

Nothing better than the Sonos product line, started in 2007 with a ZP100, ZP80, and a CR100. Now I have 2 ZP100’s, 2 ZP120’s, 1 ZP80, 1 ZP90, 3 PLAY:5’s, 2 PLAY:3’s, 3 CR100’s, 1 CR200, and a WD100. Every room of the house is connected as well as the garage and backyard. It’s sad that components of our new master bathroom were built and sized (cabinetry) to hold a PLAY:5.

RoddyratAugust 31st, 2011 at 6:30 pm

Since I installed my first zp120 some three years ago (now expanded to 5 zones & growing) I have raved about it to friends & family resulting in a further 8 s5’s in their homes : )

Eric R.August 31st, 2011 at 7:16 pm

I recently had outdoor party and everyone there couldnt believe that big sound was coming from that little box(play:5!!). They also couldnt believe that I was controlling it all from the sonos controller in my pocket! The entire system was set up in about 10 minutes! I said that it has to be more complicated than this…it wasn’t…SONOS ROCKS!

Christian N WatsonAugust 31st, 2011 at 7:38 pm

ZP120 in the lounge, and an S5 in the kitchen. The family all love the fact that they can get music at the touch of a button (either from the local library on the home NAS or via Napster) – so easy my 6 year old is frequently dialling up music. The best music system in the world! Have convinced the in-laws to go Sonos. Keep up the good work.

Darren BaldwinAugust 31st, 2011 at 8:04 pm

I have a play 5 in the kitchen/lounge area and the parents like nothing more than coming in a dialing in some old classics from  Me I need a play 5 or play 3 for my garage as there is an old motorbike needing my attention, but I need some sounds..!!

JforierAugust 31st, 2011 at 8:13 pm

Please fix the Lion/iTunes-problem as soon as possible. After that I can decide to buy more of your wonderful equipment.

Nick SatkovichAugust 31st, 2011 at 8:16 pm

I started with Sonos back in 2006 with 2 ZP100’s, 2 ZP80’s and a CR100. Now I have Sonos throughout my house and even at my office! Congrats on reaching 1 million Sonos, keep up the good work!

ghostgadgetguyAugust 31st, 2011 at 8:23 pm

I started with an S5 in our garden window in the kitchen. Guest are amazed at the rich sound. We bought another S5 as a portable unit for parties that my daughter has claimed for her room. Now with a ZP90, we have the sun room and patio covered as well. If I had a dollar for every guest that said they had to have one, well it would be enough for a good steak dinner!

CoenAugust 31st, 2011 at 8:25 pm

I’ve got a ZP100 in the bedroom, a ZP100 in the kitchen, a ZP100 in the diningroom, a ZP80 in the livingroom and about 10 SP100’s hanging in al the rooms, toilets and bathroom. And I’m saving up for 4 S3’s in the two rooms for the children and an S5 on the roofterras. I love Sonos!

Gary BlouinAugust 31st, 2011 at 8:32 pm

Currently – I have a Play:5 in the exercise room and one in the kitchen. Planning to expand into the home office, garage and would like one on my back deck. Is there anything good for weather proofing a Play:5 unit?

SonosAugust 31st, 2011 at 8:55 pm

I have a ZP90 in the Living room and a Play:5 in the office. Controling with a iphone4 and CR200. it is the Best Thing that could happen to me since i have Children. Now i don’t have to worry about destroying cd’s anymore.

Corbin JohnsonAugust 31st, 2011 at 9:04 pm

Where to even start… Have had setups in every house and apartment I’ve lived in since 2004, and my current accommodations boast 4 ZP100s, 3 ZP80s, 1 ZP90, 1 S5, and 2 play:3s. Altogether, close to 5000 watts of power and counting. Can’t even count how many systems I’ve sold just by demonstrating it and its simplicity to everyone. Keep up the good work Sonos.

Tim GroenwalsAugust 31st, 2011 at 9:22 pm

A couple of S5’s, 2 Zp120’s and a ZP90. Only want another Sonos in the garden. Can’t wait for a waterproof outdoor version?

Alan CybulskiAugust 31st, 2011 at 9:57 pm

I have a Play:5 in the living room and one in the kitchen. But my favourite is in my garage where I enjoy a cigar and a couple of beer every night, while listening to my newly purchased Play:3. That’s where I unwind from a hectic work day and enjoy the wonderful sound that is Sonos, all controlled with a CR200. I only wish that I had more in other rooms, but that will come in time. Keep it up Sonos!!!

Mark MalinAugust 31st, 2011 at 10:14 pm

I started the Sonos collection in my pub in 2007 with 1 ZP80, 1 ZP90 a zone bridge and a controller (100) I’ve since added a ZP100, ZP120, new controller (200) and an S5 for the patio.
It’s great on a Saturday night when the customers get to queue up their favorite songs, they love it and it’s become a working showroom for Sonos ! At a rough guess I think I’ve sold the system to about 25 Of my customers. If only Napster did a commercial agreement. Any chance ?

Listening to some great sahara desert blues I read abt in today’s NYT – thx to Sonos I could pull up the tunes as I read the Larry Rohter piece.

Of many things I love abt Sonos here are 2 –

It’s tech stuff that gets better not worse over time, my 4 Sonos boxes are abt 6 years old and not only still good, they have much more capability than they first did, with no charge upgrades.

And adding more Sonos equipment exponentially increases the value of what you have.

Which is why I want more!

MamijaSeptember 3rd, 2011 at 4:18 am

Mark of Adelaide.

We have ZP 120 in 8 rooms and love it to bits. Sonos has produced are rarity, a product that works and does everything faultessly. I’m sure all Sonos owners are your best sales people.

Christian van MeerSeptember 3rd, 2011 at 5:14 pm

Mark GSeptember 7th, 2011 at 7:42 pm

Hi Sonos, now the osx lion file share is fixed, I’m very happy again. I have a zp90 in the lounge an s5 in the bedroom and one in the office, and a new s3 in the kitchen. Good luck for the next 1 million sales…:)

SonyaSeptember 10th, 2011 at 1:10 am

Reasonably new to Sonos. I was introduced to it by Gary Anderson Sound & Vision in Cromwell, New Zealand when I was trying to find something suitable in my crappy reception area. Just purchased by second S5 and also an S3 for the bedroom. Music is suddenly pleasurable again!

malSeptember 14th, 2011 at 9:07 am

I have just bought a S5 and bridge, its in my living room and I love it. I’m having a conservatory built at this moment in time and would love to add Sonos to that room, but I’m not sure which one would be most appropriate.

SonosSeptember 14th, 2011 at 4:45 pm

Hi Mal – We’re so glad you’re enjoying it (and thanks for sharing the pic)! As for the conservatory, it depends on the overall size. The PLAY:3, for example, is appropriate for smaller rooms (kitchens, bedrooms, etc.) and the PLAY:5 is best for larger rooms (living rooms, great rooms, etc.). And you can always call us if you want to narrow down the options. :)

I sent an email asking how to become a distributor for Central Asia. I have purchased over $6000 in Sonos equipment over the last year, and am an avid supporter and promoter. I believe there is an untapped market here in Central Asia that would be great for both our companies. Please follow up on my email I sent a few days ago. Thanks again

I agree with all the below, Sonos is excellent for music. However, the Spotify integration do not get close to the functionality I would have by using Spotifys on software combined with, lets say, Airfoil. The GUI of Sonos simply starts to feel old. Looking forward to a more modern user interface.

zaggiOctober 31st, 2011 at 9:45 am

Just got my SONOS, and I already love it! Got a ZonePlayer in the tv room, and a Play:3 in the dining room. An iPad and two Android phones as controller. Nice.

Jackie110January 1st, 2012 at 8:00 am

i’ve recently brought the play3 with the idea of adding speaker as I can afford them. I would love a speaker in the bathroom which would be best?

ToddJanuary 17th, 2012 at 8:53 pm

We entertain all the time and Sonos is literally the life of every party. Everyone has a controller (iPhone or iPad) and we take turns picking old songs from different genres. I am in medical device sales and should consider changing industries as I find myself selling the system to everyone who walks in my home. I own 6 S5’s strategically placed throughout our house and the sound is absolutely incredible……I tell everyone Bose quality! One thing I just discovered is that you can stream sound from a TV to some or all of your speakers. We are having 60 people over for a Super Bowl party and I can’t wait to see the reaction of the people when they hear the sound!! I love this system and I guarantee you will too! Hey Sonos!!! I want to be first on the list when you launch outdoor speakers!!!!!
