It happened in music: The legendary 808
In fall of 2008, Kanye West recorded his album “808s and Heartbreak” at Glenwood Studios in Burbank, California and Avex Recording Studio in Honolulu, Hawaii. The 808 (technically the Roland TR-808) is a drum machine introduced in early 1980 that, although, not popular during its actual release, gained widespread popularity amongst rap artists for its deep bass kick. It is now one of the most iconic sounds in music, particularly in electro hip hop; in fact, the 808 has been on more hit records than any other drum machine.
In honor of the legendary 808, we compiled a playlist of eight tacks that wouldn’t exist without it. Have a listen, and then add your own drum machine favorites directly to our collaborative list.
