Amber Lewis crams a lot into life – running a hugely successful interior design agency, designing her own line of homewares and commanding a social media following of millions.

So at home in Calabasas, California – with her musician husband Mike, daughter Gwyneth, Gwynie for short, and a host of rescue animals – Amber’s happiness lies in simple pleasures. She loves nothing more than curling up on the couch, listening to music and watching Gwyneth dance round the backyard to her favorite songs. “She’s got some darn good taste for a seven-year-old,” she laughs.

And when it comes to designing interiors for her clients, Amber keeps the focus firmly on family time, togetherness and technology that makes life simpler.

Effortless style: Why Amber Lewis believes in keeping it simple.

Thanks for chatting with us, Amber. Can you start by telling us about the role music played in your life growing up?
My dad was a HUGE music buff. When I was growing up in the 80s and 90s, he was pretty hip and we grew up listening to Morrissey, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and of course, the amazing oldies like Cat Stevens and The Eagles.

He and your mum encouraged you to explore your creative side. Did that really inspire you?
I definitely think that growing up with the freedom to create allowed me to figure out who I was and what I was passionate about early on. We love to camp, travel and try new things and that’s passed down to my daughter. It’s really awesome!

You’ve been in interior design since you were 19. How has the way people listen to music at home evolved since then?
My clients are super-interested in integrating audio/visual these days, now that the home has become the main place to entertain. When I started out, you had to have all kinds of huge components for the music systems, speakers, and large AV thingamabobs! They were so ugly. How about a multiple CD player!! Yuck!

How do you go about creating the perfect listening space for a client?
It all starts with a comfortable, lived-in room you can enjoy your time in. You need some comfy couches to lounge on! Some of my clients have designated rooms for their music. But you’ve got to be sure you understand the mood and tone of the music they dig. If they listen to Mozart, then they’re going to want a different vibe than if they listen to Led Zeppelin.

What about in terms of audio set-up?
More than anything, I think clients want the entertainment process to be as simple as possible. No one wants to memorize ten different remotes or control panels. I think voice control is the next big technology in our homes. Who wouldn’t want a personal assistant that you can shout commands to and won’t pass judgment on your needs?!

How would you sum up the style of your own home?
Our house is always crazy! Whether we’re crafting a school project or chasing our little fur babies around, there’s just never a dull moment. We actually moved into a fixer-upper that needs a ton of work, but it’s finding the time to make it all happen. I do have an awesome main area in my house, where we entertain and spend most of our time. It’s cozy, California eclectic modern – little touches of mid-century, softened up with organic ceramics and textural fabrics. My fave signature style!

What role does music play in your family life?
Since my husband is a musician, music is a huge part of our lives. I wake Gwyneth up every morning with a surprise song. It changes every day, but it’s mostly a song from the 70s or 80s that I grew up with, or a song she needs to know! They’re always fun and make the perfect start to her day!

We’re always playing music in the office, or at our shop to set the right mood for our guests and clients. And when we get home in the afternoon, we put on a soundtrack for the evening that creates a fun atmosphere.

As a fan of our Sonos One, what impact has voice control had on how you listen at home?
I don’t have to over-think things – the voice activation is life changing. For things like the weather and news, my husband is the main controller. I’m more in love with the music aspect. You can have whatever song you want, at any time. It works so easily and seamlessly that I don’t remember ever living without it.

I find myself trying to use it outside my home now – I’m shocked when I yell commands in public and there’s no song in return! Haha!
